Down the Rabbit Hole – Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny by Holly Madison Book Review

Book: “Down the Rabbit Hole” by Holly Madison
My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Review:

I finished reading Holly Madison‘s memoir about life at the Playboy Mansion last night. It took me a whopping 2 days to finish this book. It was that juicy and an extreme page turner, let me tell you that.

When “The Girls Next Door” reality show was airing, I was in high school and would always watch it with my mom and sister. Holly was always my favorite while Kendra was my sisters favorite. (As my sister and I always had to have favorites.) And I’m pretty sure my moms favorite was Bridget, probably because she had a masters degree as I know now. haha!

I was never really into Playboy or had interest in any girls affiliated with Playboy. But I loved  The Girls Next Door and Holly, Bridget, and Kendra. They had such cute personalities, and really very likable for a reality show. After the show ended I still kept up on the girls a little and always wanted to know more about why Holly decided all the change in her life.

This book definitely explains everything. I wasn’t aware Holly came out with this book when it did, so I recently became interested in reading it when I saw how many great reviews there were on Amazon. Most of the book is written in chronological order, with some random older or new stories added in at certain times. The book is well written, and shows how intelligent Holly really is. There’s no other authors credited on the book for ‘helping’ her write it, so it appears Holly wrote this memoir herself, and its absolutely amazing.

If you watched The Girls Next Door, you would notice that Holly was always trying to do something, create or achieve things. So I’m not surprised at how detailed this book is and perfected to a T by Holly. I understand a lot of people claim Holly as a ‘user’ and how she made her ‘own choices’ so nobody should feel sorry for her for being so depressed at the mansion. But honestly, one can’t be judged when they are literally stuck in a situation and don’t want to go backwards in life. Holly felt that if she left the mansion, she would be forced to go back to her small town and a live a life with no opportunity. Yes, she had a long 7 years of being taken advantage of and misery, but in the end she came out as successful as can be.

It would be different if Holly was literally a bimbo, but she’s honestly not. Her book is more well written than any of the other Playboy girls memoirs, and Holly always wanted to be creative and do something for herself. People make mistakes and that happens in order to grow. Holly reminded me a lot of myself in the book, and I’m sure she’s opened a lot of eyes to millions of girls out there. Many girls out there are in abusive relationships and can’t seem to get out of it, and that’s exactly how Holly’s situation was as well. When she was finally able to get out of the relationship, it’s not like she already had a plan! She even had to go back to her hometown for a week because she didn’t know what to do with her life.

What really got me was how relatable Holly is! She was literally a normal 21 year old girl, going to school and working while trying to make her dreams come true. It’s such an inspiration to see how successful one can be after just being a regular girl from a small town. I appreciate her for staying strong and finally having the courage to do what’s good for her, not anybody else.

This book was not only about girls living at the Playboy mansion, but it was about learning to grow, be confident, and self worthy. Holly acknowledged how naive she was and owned up to all her mistakes and situations. If you want to get a behind the scenes look at reality TV, Playboy, Holly, relationships, drama, and more, than you will definitely enjoy this book. Even if you weren’t a Holly fan, I believe this book is really an eye opener and anyone would enjoy this read. Never give up on your dreams!
